Keeping Cool In Summer With Roof Vents

August 29th, 2017

For those of us who grew up in homes that did not have air conditioners, we were able to survive the sweltering heat of our Australian summers with a few simple and inexpensive ideas taught to us by our parents.

Keeping the heat out of our homes during the day while opening up the house at night was a very practical solution that actually did work.

Ventilation is important for our comfort and health throughout the year and it is the perfect natural companion to roof space insulation, and therefore the humble roof vents have an important role to play.

In the hotter months, roof ventilation systems help remove a build up of hot air in the roof space.

Cooling our home without turning on our air conditioner will save us money as well as saving energy which is very beneficial for our environment.

Let’s take a look at what you need to do to cool your house without using aircon.

  1. The most important thing to do first is have an effective roof ventilation system installed in your roof at home.
  2. Close all windows and drapes at first thing in the morning to prevent the rays of the sun entering your home.
  3. Open all the internal doors to create a flow of positive pressure air streams circulating through the house.
  4. Ceiling fans will help to move positive pressure streams throughout the home.
  5. Pedestal fans placed at either end of the house facing towards each other with open windows will generate excellent cross ventilation.
  6. Canvas awnings are another great inexpensive way to reduce summer heat entering your house.
  7. Smart gardens around your house need to include plantings of ground covers, trees and shrubs to shade the walls in the hottest part of the day. The ideal trees to plant are deciduous trees, as they will protect your house from the hot summer sun as well as provide your home with some warm sunlight in the colder winter months when the tree leaves have disappeared.
  8. A light coloured roof will make a big difference to the cooling of your home.
