Attic Ladders

Attic Ladders

At RJ Attic Ladders (previously Hiding Stairways) we understand how difficult it is to find storage space in the home for all your seasonal household items and precious personal possessions. One of the most under-utilised areas in the majority of homes is the roof space or area between the roof and the ceiling.  The installation of an attic ladder will help you to access your roof space in a safe and convenient manner.

Our attic ladders are for occasional use, to access your roof space for storage or for maintenance access.  They are not built for frequent daily use, such as to access a bedroom or living area.  If this is the type of usage you require then it would be more appropriate to look at a permanent staircase.  If space is an issue then a modern spiral stair option may be more appropriate – please ring our office for ideas and recommendations.

Why use an RJ Attic Ladder?

  • An attic ladder enables you to safely access your roof space to store seasonal items (e.g Xmas trees and suitcases) and other items you only need to use occasionally.  It’s a great way to de-clutter your home.
  • Use of free standing ladders (eg. A frame ladders) in the home has one of the highest injury rates. Attic ladders provide the safest, easiest and most convenient access to your roof space.
  • Replace your ceiling manhole with an attic ladder and you will have no more dirty fingerprints on the ceiling and attic manhole cover.
  • Anti-slip grooves on the attic ladder improve your grip while moving items for storage up and down the attic ladder into the storage space.
  • Thermo insulating attic trapdoors on our attic ladders maintain the integrity of roof space insulation products in the attic.

Attic ladder options

Timber Attic Ladder

There are a number of factors you need to take into account when you are making your decision on what type of ladder you are going to install. When looking at timber ladders, consider their load rating and the quality of the timber used. Halfway up a ladder is not the time to discover that the timber quality is not what it should be. Look for rebated joints (not just screwed) and timber growth lines that are tight. Make sure you are buying something that will be safe, secure (a strong latch) and has a reputation for quality so that you are able to get parts and service if required in the future.

One of the biggest differences that you will see between models of high quality such as those we carry and some of the other ladders available in the market is the quality of the hatch door. These should be insulated to minimise the potential for heat transfer between the roof space and the inside of the home and should have an effective seal to prevent dust entering your home while the hatch is closed. Have a good look at how the hatch door will look from the inside of your home.   A well finished hatch door will look sleek and modern.

Aluminium Attic Ladder

As with timber attic ladders, there are a number of factors you need to take into account when you are making your decision on what type of ladder you are going to install.  When looking at aluminium ladders, consider their load rating and the quality of the finish.  Make sure you are buying something that will be safe, secure (a strong latch) and has a reputation for quality so that you are able to get parts and service if required in the future.
